commentDAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) April 21, 2011 — Two men who ran a software company in Clinton have been sentenced to more than 3 years in prison on charges they committed visa fraud to bring foreign workers to the United States.
The U.S. attorney's office says Fazal Mehmood and Viheet Maheshwari were sentenced Wednesday at the federal courthouse in Davenport. They pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit visa fraud and making false statements and engaging in monetary transactions in criminally derived property.
The men ran companies called Worldwide Software Services and Sana Systems. Federal prosecutors say they applied for visas for foreign workers that contained false statements about their jobs and work locations.
District Judge John Jarvey also ordered each man to forfeit more than $1 million in proceeds of the fraud.
