Equal Rights Amendment Project Intern 05/2022 - 08/2022
Columbia Law School, New York, New York United States
Industry: Legal/Policy
The ERA Project at Columbia Law School’s Center for Gender and Sexuality Law is a law and policy think tank established in January 2021 to develop academically rigorous research, policy papers, expert guidance, and strategic leadership on the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the U.S. Constitution, and on the role of the ERA in advancing the larger cause of gender-based justice.
I was responsible for drafting policy papers, legal briefs, “explainers”, and talking points to educate policymakers, media, courts, and the public on the scope and nature of gender-based inequality, on ERA-related court decisions and legislative proposals, and how the ERA would be instrumental in defending and advancing gender-based justice. I also researched state ERAs and draft policy agendas to lay out substantive and affirmative policies designed to robustly implement and enforce state ERAs. Further, I researched government policies that have a disparate, and negative, impact on women and other gender minorities; measures designed to address those impacts; and measures that address family leave, childcare, wage gap, and other forms of economic inequality. Additionally, I researched the legislative history of State ERAs and state ratifications of the federal ERA. Finally, I was also in charge of developing strategies to use state ERAs to challenge systematic sex discrimination in contexts such as pregnancy discrimination, sexual harassment, gender identity discrimination, and criminal justice reform.--
