Experiences:

Research activities as PhD student 07/15/2024 - 09/30/2024
Tufts University, Boston, Massachusetts United States
Advancing Sustainability in Textile Waste Valorization and Silk Production: Development of Non-Destructive Analytical Techniques for Synthetic Fiber Identification, and Investigation of Food Waste as an Alternative Silkworm Diet.
My main research activity at Tufts University was focused on two key projects related to textile waste valorization and sustainable silk production. The first project involved the development of non-destructive analytical techniques for identifying synthetic fibers in textile waste to optimize silk reuse processes. The second project explored alternative, more sustainable food sources for silkworm farming, investigating the use of food waste and discards as a potential diet for silkworms. I gained experience in research planning and management, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams from various fields such as material science, biomedical engineering, design and fashion. I designed experiments using both chemical and statistical approaches, applied advanced laboratory techniques like Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, and microscopy, and managed silkworm farming, including animal handling and data analysis on growth and survival rates under different experimental conditions.--
Research activities as PhD student 10/01/2023 - 02/29/2024
Universitat de les Illes Balears, Plama de Mallorca, Mallorca Spain
Development and Optimization of Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) for the Extraction of Fatty Acids from Fishing Discards and Organic Waste for Biofuel Production
My project focused on the development of Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) for the extraction of fatty acids from fishing discards and organic waste, aiming to produce biofuels. I employed various laboratory techniques, such as Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, to analyze and optimize the extraction process. The use of innovative NADES technology allowed for more sustainable and efficient recovery of fatty acids compared to traditional solvents. Additionally, I gained experience in reporting and presenting scientific findings, effectively communicating research results in both academic and industrial settings. This work contributes to sustainable waste valorization strategies and biofuel production.--
Tutoring activity 05/15/2022 - 12/15/2023
University of Bari Aldo Moro, Bari, Apulia Italy
Lecturer and Academic Tutor in Chemistry, Ecology and Zoology
I gained experience in teaching and mentoring students in various subjects, including chemistry, ecology and zoology. This involved delivering lectures and conducting laboratory activities that helped students better understand key concepts. Additionally, I provided tailored tutoring sessions for both undergraduate and graduate students, focusing on enhancing their academic performance. I designed and delivered formative activities that not only reinforced theoretical knowledge but also fostered problem-solving skills and encouraged independent learning. This role allowed me to support students in achieving their educational goals while fostering their critical thinking abilities.--
Doctorate 10/01/2021 - 10/01/2024
University of Bari Aldo Moro, Bari, Apulia Italy
Development of Sustainable Processes for Waste Valorization: Advancing Waste-to-Energy and Waste-to-Products Strategies in the Circular Economy
My doctoral research focused on the development of green chemical processes for waste valorization, with a particular emphasis on biodiesel production from organic waste. I applied a range of chemical analysis and experimental techniques, including Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Attenuated Total Reflectance spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), to optimize the conversion of waste oils into biofuels. Key aspects of the research involved evaluating catalyst efficiency, reaction conditions, and sustainability metrics to maximize biodiesel yield while minimizing environmental impact and costs. In addition to biodiesel, I also explored waste-to-products strategies, investigating the extraction of bioactive compounds using Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE) for applications in the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries. My work provided significant insights into sustainable waste management solutions, with a focus on quality assurance for biofuels, including viscosity, saponification number, and heating value. Throughout my research, I developed strong skills in project planning, data analysis, scientific writing, and presenting complex findings to diverse audiences, contributing to the advancement of circular economy practices in biofuel and bioactive compound production.--
